Choosing Dog Food for Your Labradoodle
Labradoodles range from mini to standard size, so one bag rarely fits every dog. Here is how to read the AAFCO statement, ingredients and calories before you choose.

Foods for Labradoodles, compared by label
Protein and fat as each brand publishes them: guaranteed minimums from the label (as fed), or the dry-matter averages some brands publish instead, marked as such. We compare labels; we do not run feeding trials. Your veterinarian should choose the food for a dog with a health condition.

How we compare foods
We read each food's published label: the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement, the guaranteed analysis, the calorie statement and the ingredient list, from the brand's own page. We note which life stage each food is formulated for and whether it covers large-breed growth. We do not test foods on dogs, accept payment from brands or earn commission on these foods. Labradoodle Feeding Questions Answered
How big will my Labradoodle get, and does it change the food?
Sources differ. Basepaws lists Standard males averaging 50 to 75 lb and Miniatures at 15 to 45 lb, while Chewy gives somewhat different ranges. Size matters because AAFCO puppy statements treat dogs expected to reach 70 lb or more as adults differently. Ask your breeder or veterinarian what size to expect.
What should a puppy food label say for a Standard Labradoodle?
Whole Dog Journal explains that growth foods carry a statement either including or excluding growth of large-size dogs, meaning 70 lb or more as an adult. The large-size version requires lower maximum calcium. For Standard-size puppies, look for the "including growth of large-size dogs" wording, and confirm with your veterinarian.
Is there a food made specifically for Labradoodles?
None turned up in the label data we compared. Royal Canin makes Labrador Retriever formulas for puppies, adults and dogs 5 and older, but those are written for purebred Labs. Check with the brand about whether one suits your dog, and read the AAFCO statement and your dog's size first.
Can the right food help with hip problems, itchy skin or fast eating?
Chewy's breed page mentions hip and elbow dysplasia in larger Standards and fast eating, and Basepaws mentions skin sensitivity. No food on this site is claimed to prevent or treat any of these. A veterinarian decides diet for an individual dog, and prescription diets come only from them.
Should I worry about grain-free food and the FDA's DCM investigation?
The FDA's latest update on its DCM investigation is dated December 23, 2022, and the agency said it would not post more until there is meaningful new scientific information. Check the FDA page for anything newer, and ask your veterinarian whether your dog's diet needs any change.
